What you need to know about the Allied Health Graduate and Intern Program

Bayside Health currently offers Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy Graduate Programs (Grade 1, Rotational Positions) and a Pharmacy Intern Program with a start of calendar year intake.

Graduate and Intern Programs are for the duration of 12 months and include potential rotations across a variety of departments at Wonthaggi Hospital, San Remo Community Centre and Phillip Island Community Hospital (several rotations per program).

Graduate Programs are currently offered in the following clinical areas:

• Sub-Acute (OT and Physiotherapy)
• Medical (OT and Physiotherapy)
• Aged Care (Physiotherapy)
• Community (Physiotherapy)
• Inpatient (Pharmacy)

Graduates and Interns are provided with ongoing support from the Graduate Coordinator, Allied Health Clinical Educators and Clinical Support Staff within the Learning and Development team based at Wonthaggi, in conjunction with the clinical staff they work with.

All newly graduated Allied Health staff (including those from other Allied Health professions) are included in a Regional Interprofessional Allied Health New Graduate Support Program which includes monthly sessions throughout the year.
 
Included within the 12 month program are three paid study days, enabling the development and consolidation of current and additional skills, as well as exposure to other areas within the health service. 

Applications to the Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy Graduate Programs are made via job advertisements posted on the Bayside Health website. Pharmacy Intern applications are via the Victorian Hospital Pharmacy Intern Program, administered by SHPA.

Pathway to practice

This program is targeted to nurses transitioning out of their graduate year, to be supported and thrive as they advance their careers within ongoing or new environments.

The Bayside Health Regional P2P program is part-time (0.8 FTE) with the aim to assist in further developing knowledge, skills and competence in a supported specialised environment. It offers supportive succession planning to achieve your future career goals including transition to postgraduate studies.

The P2P program is partnered with Federation University, and includes funded tertiary education, protected study time, and credit towards future postgraduate studies.

Specialties may include:

• Emergency Department
• Perioperative Department
• District Nursing
• Acute and Subacute Inpatient Wards

Bayside Health Regional P2P Nurses are provided with: 

Ongoing support from the Postgraduate Coordinator and the Learning and Development team, in conjunction with their department specific Educator, Clinical Development Nurse, Nurse Unit Manager and clinical nurse colleagues.

Federation University’s Higher Education Unit:

• Early Career Nursing Practice, worth 15 credit points. It covers enhanced practice by developing their knowledge and skills, within areas such as:
  - Effective clinical leadership
  - Self-awareness
  - Change management
  - Advancing skills in health assessment
• Four paid study days, enabling the development and consolidation of current and additional skills
• Regular debrief sessions
• Professional development opportunities
• Opportunities to showcase your skills

Transition to Specialty Practice (TSP) Program

This program is targeted to registered nurses with at least 2 years of acute clinical nursing and recent experience in their specialty department, undertaking a postgraduate course with an Australian University, an opportunity to extend their knowledge and skills, and have access to additional resources during their study.

Bayside Health Regional TSP Nurses are provided with:

Ongoing support from the Postgraduate Coordinator and the Learning and Development team, in conjunction with their department specific Educator, Clinical Development Nurse, Nurse Unit Manager and clinical nurse colleagues.

• Onsite support, in addition to your university’s resources, in completing your postgraduate studies, including protected study leave
• Optional four additional paid study days, enabling the development and consolidation of current and further skills
• Professional development opportunities
• Recognition of achievements and supportive succession planning
