Stomal therapy

We work with teams in the hospital to care for people who have, or will have, a stoma (an artificial opening on the wall of your abdomen to collect waste)

What we do

The Stomal Therapy service is responsible for the care and education of individuals who are anticipating or have had surgery resulting in the creation of a stoma. A stoma acts as an opening for body waste such as urine and faeces to exit the body.

Stomal Therapy is available for:

  • Management of all types of stomas
  • Assistance with selection of appropriate stomal appliance/pouch
  • Techniques for applying pouch to stoma
  • Family education
  • Ensuring individuals with a stoma are able to enjoy a full family, social and working life
  • Skin complaints
  • Hernia management
  • Dietary advice for individuals following stoma formation
  • Learning how to order supplies from ostomy associations

Who we care for

We provide:

  • Education and counselling to patients and their family or carers who are undergoing surgery for stoma formation
  • Assistance in organising stoma supplies
  • Outpatient follow-up of patients who have had stomal surgery
  • Assistance for patients, families and treating doctors in the management of complications associated with stomach problems, such as fistulas and complex wounds
