Prior to joining Bayside Health, the Gippsland Southern Health Service (GSHS) has been caring for the South Gippsland community for more than three decades.
Our Story
Formed in 1992 through the amalgamation of Korumburra District Hospital and Woorayl and District Memorial Hospital, GSHS provides a comprehensive range of specialist, general, acute, aged and residential, allied health and community services. Care is delivered across two campuses in Leongatha and Korumburra, supported by a dedicated local workforce of around 500 staff.
From 1 January 2026, GSHS, including Korumburra Hospital and Leongatha Memorial Hospital, will become part of Bayside Health, a regional public health service bringing together trusted providers across Melbourne and Victoria’s south. This change strengthens how services work together across the region, while maintaining local hospitals, teams, and care close to home for South Gippsland residents.
GSHS will continue to operate as a key local service within Bayside Health’s Regional Care Group, ensuring local leadership, community connection, and continuity of care remain central to decision-making.
GSHS is primarily funded by the Victorian Department of Health and the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care, and operates under the direction of the relevant Ministers for Health and Aged Care at both state and national levels.
The service is also supported by the generosity of patients, families, community groups, donors, and corporate partners. This support helps enhance services, facilities, and patient care outcomes for the South Gippsland community.
