Device requirements
To use our telehealth service, you will need:
- a reliable internet connection (please complete a test call to check whether your internet speed is sufficient).
- web-camera, speakers and microphone (already built into laptops and mobile devices)
Depending on your device, please make sure you have an up to date version of either:
- Google Chrome web browser, if using a desktop/laptop (Windows or Mac OS) or an Android tablet/smartphone
- Safari web browser, if you are using an Apple desktop or laptop (Mac OS) or iPad or iPhone.
Data usage
You don’t use any data while in the 'online waiting room' waiting for your Bayside Health clinician or specialist to join you.
A Telehealth consultation uses less than half of the data you would use while watching a YouTube video in High Definition. That's about 230 MB on a mobile device, and 450 MB on a PC for a 20 minute call, which is similar to Skype or FaceTime
Data use is less on lower-speed internet connections, or if you’re using a less powerful computer, tablet, or smartphone. These factors can also reduce the overall quality of the videocall.
This step-by-step guide explains how regional Victoria residents can easily access, book, and attend text, phone, or video appointments with healthcare professionals from home
To get started with a health appointment video call follow these steps to help you on your way to feeling better.
Step one - What is Telehealth?
Telehealth lets you speak with a doctor, specialist, or nurse by phone or video call from home. It is not for emergencies. Always phone 000 if your situation is life-threatening.
Step two - Is it right for your situation?
Telehealth is suitable for things like reviewing test results, repeat prescriptions, mental health check-ins, and managing chronic conditions. You will still need to visit in person for physical examinations or blood and urine tests.
Step three - Do you have a Medicare card?
Most people with a Medicare card can access Telehealth with a rebate. To be bulk-billed, you need to have visited that GP practice at least once in the past 12 months. New patients can still book but may pay a private fee.
Step four - Register with MyMedicare
Registering with MyMedicare through your GP clinic or the Medicare website makes you eligible for rebates on telehealth appointments.
Step five - Finding a provider
Use the "Find a Health Service" tool at healthdirect.gov.au to locate a bulk-billing GP near you who offers telehealth. Or simply call your usual clinic and ask.
Step six - Booking your appointment
Call your clinic or use their online booking system. Tell the receptionist whether you want a phone or video appointment. They will give you a time and a link to join.
Step seven - Getting your device ready
You can use a smartphone, tablet, or computer. (see above) Make sure it is charged, your camera and microphone work, and you have a reliable internet connection. No special app is neede, the call runs through your web browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge).
Step eight - Preparing for your appointment
Have your current medications, recent test results, and a description of your symptoms ready. Find a quiet, private spot at home. You can bring a family member or carer if you like.
Step nine - Joining the video call
Log in five minutes early using the link your clinic provided. Enter your name and phone number when prompted. For phone-only appointments, just wait for the doctor to call you.
Step ten - It's the same as face-to-face
During the consultation Speak clearly and describe your symptoms as you normally would. Your doctor can send prescriptions, referrals, and results to your phone or email afterwards. If the video drops out, the practice will usually switch to a phone call to finish the appointment.
Step eleven - What happens next
After your appointment If your doctor bulk bills, there is nothing to pay. If not, you can claim a partial rebate through Medicare.
