Supporting patients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
Interpreter service
Bayside Health Regional is a culturally responsive health service committed to responding to the needs of patients from a culturally and linguistically diverse background (CALD).
We strongly support individual's rights to an interpreter service and equitable access to care for everyone, regardless of culture, background or language skills. We can arrange language services through qualified third-party providers to support understanding of health needs and informed consent.
This includes support for people from culturally and linguistically diverse communities, as well as those who use Auslan (Australian Sign Language).
What we do
Bayside Health Wonthaggi & Phillip Island can provide an interpreter service via Language Loop or Telephone Interpreting Service (TIS National) for emergency department visits, inpatient stays or outpatient appointments across the whole organisation.
Information for family and carers
Family, friends, carers should not act as interpreters for patients and for this reason we advise language services should be booked and utilised for best communication outcomes. Where possible consumer's country of birth, language spoken at home and the need for an interpreter, including Auslan, will be accurately recorded in your/their health record on admission to all Bayside Health Regional services and programs.
Cost
This service is charged to Bayside Health.
