L2P program

L2P helps young drivers gain vital driving experience, connecting them with cars, mentors, and opportunity

What we do

The L2P Learner Driver Program is a joint initiative between Kooweerup Hospital and Cardinia Shire that assists learner drivers gain the minimum 120 hours of driving experience needed to get their probationary driver's license.

Many kids don’t have easy access to a car, or anyone to sit in a car with them for 120 hours. L2P, a VicRoads initiative funded by TAC, connects these learner drivers with trained community volunteers.

Even the car is provided by the program. The driving sessions occur weekly for a minimum of 1 hour.

Who can use the L2P program?

To be eligible for this free program, the learner driver must:

  • Be aged between 16 to 21
  • Face significant barriers to supervised driving experience e.g. lack of a parent/carer to assist, no access to a vehicle or financial hardship

How to become an L2P mentor

As a volunteer mentor, you have the opportunity to make a real difference in the local community, by helping a young person to develop safe driving habits.

To join L2P as a volunteer, you must:

  • Hold a full current drivers license
  • Maintain a good driving history
  • Undergo police check, working with children check and driver history check (the program covers all costs)
  • Participate in free training
  • Commit to the program for 6 months
  • Provide a minimum of 1 hour supervised driving to a learner per week
