SMART recovery program

Free self-management and recovery training to help you take control of addictive behaviours

What they do

SMART (Self-Management and Recovery Training) offers people across the Bass Coast region a practical, evidence-based pathway to overcoming addictive behaviours, whether related to alcohol, drugs, gambling or other compulsive habits.

Unlike traditional 12-step programs, SMART is grounded in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and motivational principles.

Empowering individuals to build their own tools for lasting change rather than relying on a higher power or life-long dependency identity.

What they offer

For a regional community like Bass Coast, where access to specialist services can be limited by geography, SMART provides flexible options including local face-to-face meetings and online groups, meaning no-one must travel far or wait long to find support.

The program encourages self-reliance, goal-setting and emotional regulation of skills that benefit not just the individual, but their families and the broader community.

Whether someone is just considering change or well into their recovery journey, SMART meets them where they are.

SMART Recovery four-point program

Create the change you need with the SMART Recovery 4-point program.

  1. Build and maintain motivation
Change requires motivation. We’ll help you to find your motivation for change, and how to maintain that along your recovery journey.
  2. Cope with urges and cravings
Urges and cravings are a normal part of recovery. We’ll help you find ways to manage them and support you even if you relapse.
  3. Manage thoughts, feelings and behaviour
We can help you to recognise and challenge the thoughts and beliefs that get in the way of change, by developing more balanced ways of viewing yourself and the world.
  4. Lead a balanced life
Once you are managing or have stopped a behaviour, you might feel a sense of emptiness. We’ll support you to set achievable goals so you can enjoy a meaningful and enjoyable life.
