Physiotherapy

We assist people across the Bass Coast region to optimise their mobility and function in day-to-day life

What we do

We provide services across the Wonthaggi and Phillip Island Community hospitals, as well as within residential aged care facilities.

Physiotherapists are highly trained and use a wide range of treatment approaches, some of which include:

  • Exercise programs to improve mobility and strengthen muscles
  • Joint mobilisation to reduce pain and stiffness
  • Muscle re-education to improve control
  • Airway clearance techniques and breathing exercises
  • Assistance with use of aids, splints, crutches, walking sticks and wheelchairs
  • Education regarding your condition and how you can help manage it yourself

While in hospital

Physiotherapy staff provide assessment and treatment for inpatients. This includes acute inpatients and those undergoing short-term rehabilitation for conditions such as stroke, fractures or following surgery and slow stream rehabilitation or Geriatric Evaluation Management (GEM).

After your hospital stay

Our Outpatients service delivers rehabilitation services to patients after they have been in hospital and for the treatment of other conditions, such as injuries. Treatment is aimed at optimising function after major health events like a stroke or joint replacement, and improving quality of life through active, educational and preventative strategies.

We also provide specialist physiotherapy services in Lymphoedema, Women's and Men’s Health, Geriactrics/Falls, Neurology, Musculoskeletal and Orthopedics.

Outpatient services are provided in the form of a short-term intervention to assist patients with acute symptoms. Patients then progress to self-management and are discharged from the service.

Residential care

Residents of our Residential Care facilities are assessed by a Physiotherapist on admission and reviewed quarterly to tailor interventions to each individual and minimise risk factors of falls and deconditioning.

Exercise groups are run two-three times per week by an Allied Health Assistant under the guidance of the physiotherapist. Our Physiotherapists are committed to optimising quality of life and promoting physical activity in our residential care centres.

Other programs

Physiotherapy staff are also involved in the delivery of programs including:

  • Cardiac Rehabilitation
  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation
  • Falls Prevention
  • Specialist Falls Clinic
  • Joint Replacement Group
  • Osteoarthritis Group
  • GEM@Home (Geriatric Evaluation and Management)
