Health promotion

Bayside Health Regional works as part of a wider primary prevention and health promotion team across Bass Coast and South Gippsland local government areas under the South Coast Prevention Team name

Living healthier on the Bass Coast

The South Coast Prevention Team is a result of a strong commitment by Bayside Health Regional and South Gippsland Hospital to work collectively across the sub-region with pooled health promotion resources. This model has provided clearer policy direction and better alignment of prevention work across Bass Coast shire and surrounding South Gippsland area since it began in 2019.

The South Coast Prevention Team take a place-based, population wide approach to primary prevention that recognises that people and places are inter-related and that places where people spend their time play an important role in shaping their health and wellbeing.

What does the South Coast Prevention team do?

The team works with partners to identify the health priorities for our community, with consideration of local health and wellbeing data, community consultation, the Community Health – Health Promotion Program Guidelines 2025 – 2029 and the Victorian Public Health and Wellbeing Plan 2023 – 2027.

Improving the health and wellbeing of our community is a long-term goal that requires collective effort with partners and multiple interventions. The team recognise that delivering multiple and mutually reinforcing interventions and ‘joined-up’ action through cross-sector efforts enables sustained impact.

Key to the delivery of the work is a platform of strong and effective partnerships. These partnerships include Public Health Services, Local Governments, Gippsland Region Public Health Unit, Gippsport, Water Corporations, Community-Based Organisations, Early Childhood Services, Outside School Hours Care and Schools.

In line with the Community Health - Health Promotion Program Guidelines 2025 – 2029, the South Coast Prevention Team focus their efforts on three health priority areas:

  • Increasing Healthy Eating
  • Increasing Active Living
  • Reducing Harm from Tobacco and E-Cigarette Use
