Patients presenting to Leongatha Memorial Hospital’s Urgent Care Centre (UCC) are receiving more timely and continuous care, following a successful project led by the physiotherapy team.

The project has strengthened access to assistive devices and mobility aids for patients attending the UCC, ensuring support is available whenever it is needed, including after-hours and on weekends.
Physiotherapist Jose Shelton led the initiative, training UCC nursing staff and After-Hours Coordinators to fit commonly used braces and mobility aids.
“Patients can now access the braces and mobility aids they need sooner, and we can focus more effectively on patients that need our specialist expertise most – including on the wards, and in the outpatients clinic,” Jose said.
Since the program commenced, physiotherapist callouts to the UCC to fit braces have fallen significantly, indicating nurses are confidently fitting commonly used braces on the spot.
As a result, the equipment fitting training has since been extended to nursing staff in the acute wards at Leongatha Memorial and Korumburra hospitals.
